It is only six months since the Sony Xperia XZ2 was launched, but we already have the Sony Xperia XZ3. Despite this sharp turnaround, this seems to be a major upgrade in some ways, especially in the new OLED screen.
In another way, however, the Xperia XZ3 seems to be businesslike for Sony and looks very similar to its predecessor.
So to help you get a grip on what's new and different about this model, we've placed the XZ3 against the XZ2 and compared it to all the major spec categories.
Sony Xperia XZ3 vs Sony Xperia XZ2 design
You will not be able to see a lot of difference between the Sony Xperia XZ3 and the Xperia XZ2 in a short glance, but because Sony had slightly refurbished the design for the XZ2, we would not really expect it to change visually less than a year later. come.
Both phones have a metal frame and a round glass back protected by Gorilla Glass 5. Both also have a rear-facing fingerprint scanner (maddening) half way up the back and have IP68 certification, which means they can survive if they are submerged to 1.5 meters deep in water for up to 30 minutes.
Both phones also have bulky edges above and below the screen, rather than a little higher, but they are at least slightly used, as both handsets have front stereo speakers (although they are apparently 20% louder on the XZ3) while a thing that does not have a handset, is a 3.5 mm headphone port.
The Sony Xperia XZ3 is slightly slimmer than the Xperia XZ2, the first comes at 9.9 mm while the last is 11.1 mm, but except that the main design difference is the colors in which they are available
Even over there is a lot of overlap, because the XZ3 comes in white silver, forest green, Bordeaux red and black, while the XZ2 is available in black, silver, green and pink.
Sony Xperia XZ3 vs Sony Xperia XZ2 display
The display is the biggest difference between the Sony Xperia XZ2 and the Sony Xperia XZ3, because while the Xperia XZ2 has a 5.7-inch 1080 x 2160 LCD screen, the Xperia XZ3 has a 6-inch QHD + OLED housing.
This is the first time Sony has pasted a QHD screen on a phone and the first time something outside the Premium range is more than Full HD +, so that's a big change that has been going on for a long time. Just like the switch to OLED – another first for the company.
This means that the Xperia XZ3 has a larger, sharper screen that is more vivid than that of the XZ2. It is also curved, which is not the Xperia XZ2 & # 39; s.
These curved edges are more than just a stylish finish, because they also give you a new way to work with the XZ3, giving you quick access to favorite apps by double-tapping the edge.
However, both handsets have an aspect ratio of 18: 9 in line with most modern smartphones and both can also display HDR content.
Sony Xperia XZ3 vs Sony Xperia XZ2 OS and power supply
The Sony Xperia XZ3 has a Snapdragon 845 chipset combined with 4 GB of RAM, which, funny enough, is exactly what the Sony Xperia XZ2 has, so do not expect huge upgrades of performance, although that is high-end specs. Both phones also have 64 GB of storage space and a microSD card slot.
However, a difference between the two is the operating system, while while the Sony Xperia XZ2 is currently using Android 8 Oreo, the Xperia XZ3 comes with the brand new Android 9 Pie.
The XZ2 gets an upgrade to it at a given time, but does not yet have it and will probably not be supported with updates as long as the XZ3 is.
Sony Xperia XZ3 vs Sony Xperia XZ2 camera and battery
Both the Sony Xperia XZ3 and Sony Xperia XZ2 have a 19 MP f / 2.0 single-lens camera at the rear with a comparable range of functions, including, in particular, the ability to film in 4K HDR. So there is not much to choose between them, at least on paper.
That said, the camera software is a bit updated for the Xperia XZ3, because the horizontal lifting of the phone can automatically start the camera, so you do not have to miss anything.
Sony has also upgraded the front camera of the XZ3 and equipped it with a 13 MP f / 1.9 snapper – probably an improvement over the standard 5 MP f / 2.2 camera on the front of the Xperia XZ2.
We will let you know whether the snapper of the XZ3 is better in practice once we have fully gone through it.
As far as the battery is concerned, the Sony Xperia XZ3 has a 3,330 mAh, which is just a little bit bigger than the 3,180 mAh battery in the Sony Xperia XZ2.
In this case it should be better, but it remains to be seen whether the extra capacity is sufficient to compensate for the larger, sharper screen. That is something that we will certainly tell you as soon as we have given the XZ3 a complete review.
Sony Xperia XZ3 vs Sony Xperia XZ2 price and availability
The Sony Xperia XZ3 will reach stores at the end of September, with pre-orders that will open from 31 August. We do not yet know the price everywhere, but in the United Kingdom it costs £ 699, about $ 910 / AU $ 1,250.
The Sony Xperia XZ2 was launched at the same price in the UK and was $ 799 in the US – so that's probably about what American buyers will pay for the XZ3. The XZ2 has now dropped in price in many stores, but only about $ 100 / £ 100.
The Sony Xperia XZ3 feels completely focused on the screen, a screen that – at least on paper – is a huge upgrade of the screen on the Sony Xperia XZ2.
There are other changes and upgrades, including a slightly larger battery, a slimmer version, a new front camera and some new software elements, but it all sounds pretty unimportant, apart from that view.
We will let you know how well all the components of the XZ3 come together after we have given it a full assessment, but looking at the specifications is all about the screen.
If you want the best screen that Sony has to offer (and no hassle with the 4K Sony Xperia XZ2 Premium), then the Xperia XZ3 is probably the phone for you. But if you are satisfied with a Full HD + LCD screen, then the Xperia XZ2 is a cheaper choice.
