Sony has just announced in a very quiet way that the upcoming Xperia event will take place on April 14 (via Droid lifeThe news comes from the Xperia YouTube channels banner, which says there will be a new product announcement at 4:30 PM Japan Standard Time – that’s 3:30 AM EST or 12:30 PM PT (if you feel like burning the midnight oil to watch live).
The banner doesn’t give any real hints as to what will be announced, but there are a few rumors floating around – one about a new flagship, the Xperia 1 III, and one about the return of the Xperia Compact, which will ultimately be an Android answer to the iPhone Mini.
It’s worth noting that there are other rumors that mention new versions of the Xperia 5 and 10, omitting the Compact altogether. But almost every rumor indicates that we will see a new entry in the flagship Xperia 1 line. Leaks indicate the 1 III will have a periscope zoom lens, and Tech radar recently published what could be the full specifications. It’s usually what’s expected from a flagship Android phone: Snapdragon 888, 12GB of memory, 5G, and a 4K 120Hz display.
It’s probably a safe bet that if only one phone was announced (which is hinted at by the singular “product” in Sony’s image), it would be the Xperia 1 III – the first line appears to be on an annual cycle. The Compact is much more of a wildcard – the last time Sony released a ‘Compact’ branded phone was in 2018, although it does use the word to market the Xperia 5 II, with its 6.1-inch screen , which is about the same size. like an iPhone 12 Pro or Galaxy S21. Rumors of a 2021 version of the Compact say it will have a 5.5-inch screen, which is only slightly larger than the screen on an iPhone Mini.
Both potential phones are rumored to be equipped with headphone jacks. As for what we will actually see in the day, only time will tell – but luckily not much is left of it.
