Son of footy legend Chris Mainwaring is sledged over his dad’s tragic death aged just 41 from a cocaine-induced seizure

AFL legend Chris Mainwaring’s son was sledged during a match about his late great father’s tragic death in 2007 over a cocaine-related seizure.

Zac Mainwaring was playing for West Australian side Claremont against the Perth Devils on Saturday when a comment was made about his father’s death, according to Western Australia.

The Western Australian Football Commission has confirmed its integrity unit is addressing the matter.

“At last weekend’s League practice match between Perth and Claremont, the WAFL was made aware of an on-field altercation that occurred between two opposing players,” the commission said in a statement.

“Following investigation which took into account all available evidence together with consultation with the directors of football operations of both clubs (representing the players), the parties concerned agreed that the education would give a satisfactory outcome.”

Mainwaring was reported to have shaken hands with the opponent in question after the match and the player apologized for the comment.

Claremont boss Darcy Coffey said the WAFL is handling the incident.

Chris Mainwaring was a two-time AFL champion and was inducted into the Western Australian Football Hall of Fame in 2005.

Zac made his senior debut for Claremont in 2022 and quickly drew comparisons to his famous father.

Several Chris Mainwaring Legends matches for Telethon were held in his honor between 2008 and 2012 with former players lining up at Subiaco Oval to raise money for children’s charities.

Zac ran with the legends team when he was nine years old and then during the 2012 edition, he was brought into the team to make a cameo for the Eagles OWLS team (Older, Wiser, Larger, Slower) and kicked. a goal in the last quarter.

The family scattered Mainwaring’s ashes at a private memorial in 2017 to mark the anniversary of his loss. At the time, Zac said he wanted to follow in his father’s footsteps in football.

“(Football) is good because sometimes it distracts me not having dad there,” he said.

‘I miss him a lot when I see other dads with their children. I remember him as a very good father and I hope I can follow in his footsteps and be like him.’

Mainwaring’s number 3 jersey was retired for three seasons after his death, while the Eagles’ Best Clubman Award was permanently renamed the Chris Mainwaring Medal.
