In May, the model welcomed her first daughter, Eloise Samantha, with her husband Elliot Grainge.
“I gained an adequate amount of weight in my first and second trimester, and then the reason we actually induced at 38 weeks was because I had a little iffy blood pressure, (and) I gained a lot of weight in my third trimester,” she continued the model.
She said her doctor thought it was “a little weird” and “something wasn’t right,” so she was induced.
Turns out her medical team was right, as she was diagnosed with postpartum preeclampsia just days after giving birth.
But once he sorted things out medically, Richie explained that he was able to lose weight quickly.
“I lost 50 pounds in three and a half weeks,” he said.
“A lot of that was also due to fluid retention,” Dr. Aliabadi added.
Richie agreed, telling listeners that he didn’t think what he gained was necessarily weight, but rather a lot of fluid.
One of the most common symptoms of postpartum preeclampsia is swelling of the “face, hands, feet, and extremities,” according to the Cleveland Clinic.

Postpartum preeclampsia is extremely dangerous and can even lead to a stroke, seizures or kidney damage if left untreated, according to Columbia University Irving Medical Center.
“When I was in the hospital, I was put on a magnesium drip for preeclampsia, and I lost 25 pounds in 48 hours in the hospital, just from the magnesium drip, and I could feel it coming off,” she said.
While on the podcast, Richie also shared how he discovered he had postpartum preeclampsia.
The Solid & Stripes designer said that when she came home from the hospital after giving birth, she “exploded like a balloon.”
“Then I went home and bloated like a balloon, literally bloated,” he revealed, explaining that he really didn’t feel well.
Richie texted her doctor again, who she said was “over the top,” and sent her nurse to check on her.
After some tests, Richie discovered her blood pressure was 165/103, which falls into the range of postpartum preeclampsia.

Luckily though, both Richie and her baby are now healthy and she is loving motherhood so far.
Dr. Aliabadi explained that while preeclampsia can occur after 20 weeks, it can also occur up to six weeks after delivery.
“It can put you at risk for seizures, so it’s a very, very dangerous condition, if you ignore it completely you can have strokes,” the doctor said.
