Less than a fortnight after helping the Socceroos reach the World Cup in Qatar, winger Awer Mabil has signed a four-year deal to play his trade in Spain’s La Liga next season.

Mabil, who scored in the success of the penalty shootout over Peru in Doha, announced on Friday afternoon in his hometown of Adelaide that he has joined Cadiz CF.

“It means everything to sign with Cadiz, to go to La Liga… it’s a dream come true for me and my family,” said Mabil.

“I’m really looking forward to it and just can’t wait.”

The 26-year-old former Adelaide United forward was loaned to Turkish club Kasimpasa last season, after making more than 100 appearances in Denmark with FC Midtjylland since 2015.

Mabil played in the 2020-21 Champions League while with the Danish club, joining an illustrious list of Australians to have scored in Europe’s top club competition.

Cadiz, based in southwestern Spain, escaped relegation last season by one place and one point. They finished 17th out of 20 La Liga clubs after regaining promotion to the top flight for the first time in 14 years in 2020.

“La Liga is one of the best leagues in the world and clearly has some of the best teams in the world in Barcelona, ​​Real Madrid and Atletico,” added Mabil.

“I never thought I would play against them and now it’s real.

“Now I just have to work hard and win at Bernabeu, that will be great…I’m going to do everything I can to win games…but I’m just looking forward to the challenges.”

Mabil could open his 2022-23 campaign against his Socceroos captain Maty Ryan, with Cadiz on August 14 against Real Sociedad.
