Sam Docherty could still be playing football this year, with the inspirational Carlton hero on course to return for another comeback.

Blues veteran Docherty ruptured his anterior cruciate ligament for a third time during the first round of the 2024 campaign, with many fearing his season was over as a result.

But according to 7News, there is optimism among the Carlton camp that the defender can play before the end of the year if the stars align.

He reportedly returned to non-contact training last week as part of his recovery and could emulate Collingwood’s Tyson Goldsack in recovering from a knee injury in a short space of time.

Docherty has been a source of inspiration to the entire football community after twice beating cancer to return to the game.

He was first diagnosed in 2020 and recovered after undergoing successful treatment, but was diagnosed with a second cancer just nine months later.
