With former US President Barack Obama set to attend Donald Trump’s inauguration alone, many are wondering which building wife Michelle will be holed up in during the historic event.

The couple, with four beautiful homes to their name, built a real estate empire worth $27 million during their 32-year marriage.

The former first family still lives in Washington DC, in a beautiful $8.1 million mansion in the Kalorama section of the capital.

The Obamas, who are worth an estimated $70 million, have put the finishing touches on a beachfront complex on the island of Oahu with two swimming pools — a fitting addition to a real estate empire that includes the Washington mansion and a house in Chicago.

After Obama left office in 2017, the couple also bought a property in the idyllic Martha’s Vineyard, an island in Massachusetts.

The sprawling estate is the most expensive in Obama’s empire at $12 million, and it is where she currently resides. skipping a state funeral for Jimmy Carter in Washington last week.

The former first lady also confirmed that she will not attend Monday’s presidential inauguration, amid swirling and unconfirmed rumors that the couple is headed for divorce.

There has been no official explanation for Michelle’s absence, prompting online speculation that there may be another explanation for why she is not appearing next to her husband and is six hours away from the US capital in the $8.7 million Hawaiian mansion of the couple.

Martha’s Vineyard

In 2020, the Obamas put down permanent roots in the $12 million mansion on Martha’s Vineyard, an island located between Slough Cove and Turkeyland Cove, Edgartown, Massachusetts.

The sprawling estate, which sits on almost 30 hectares of pristine land, offers the power couple a private retreat in a spot popular with politicians and celebrities.

The massive estate features seven bedrooms and nine bathrooms in the 7,000-square-foot main residence.

Beyond the main house, there are 29 acres of beachfront, a pool, a chef’s kitchen, an outdoor fireplace and two guest wings.

In addition, the estate includes a two-car garage, a detached barn and a boathouse.

Perhaps most notably, the Obamas enjoy private beach access with property rights, allowing them to fully embrace the island lifestyle.

The couple purchased the sprawling estate from Boston Celtics owner Wyc Grousbeck, who had the property on the market for four years and first put it on the market in 2015 for $22.5 million.

But the island faced a housing shortage that became so severe that it threatened “public safety” for residents last summer.

Staggering seasonal rental prices — an average of nearly $1,000 a night — forced regular workers, including restaurant, grocery store workers, doctors, correctional officers and emergency dispatchers, to flee their jobs on Martha’s Vineyard amid a shortage of affordable housing, officials said.

Hawaii

The Obamas bought a massive Hawaiian estate, located in the native Hawaiian community of Waimanalo, on the island of Oahu, in 2015 for $8.7 million.

The property sits on three hectares of beachfront land and was constructed in 2022.

But environmentalists were not happy with the Obamas’ construction project and allegedly found a loophole to keep a seawall on the property.

The Hawaiian estate was planned to become the former president’s main home after his retirement.

A recent report from the Enquirer claimed that Michelle would support her husband until his presidency ended, at which point he would move back to Hawaii and she would remain in Washington.

But over a decade later, they’re still together, even though she’s the one in Hawaii.

After skipping a state funeral for Jimmy Carter in Washington last week, Michelle has confirmed she will not attend Monday’s presidential inauguration, leaving her husband to endure the marching band alone again.

A spokesperson did not provide a reason for her absence after explaining that she could not appear at Carter’s funeral due to a scheduling conflict.

It has since emerged that Michelle was on holiday in Hawaii without her husband.

In 2022, footage of the former president showed him frowning as he spoke to workers building the beachfront complex.

Obama stood with his arms folded the entire time the group discussed the next steps in building the massive complex, at one point appearing to gesture as he pointed out things that likely needed to be addressed.

Construction was mired in controversy because the project took advantage of a planning loophole to preserve a seawall that almost certainly caused beach erosion.

The developers eventually built three homes on the property, including two swimming pools and a security fence on the three-acre beachfront plot.

Washington

Following Obama’s departure from the White House, the former president and former first lady purchased an 8,200-square-foot mansion in the Kalorama section of the capital, having purchased the property for $8.1 million.

The former first family stayed in the DC home while their daughter, Sasha, completed high school at Sidwell Friends.

After Obama left office on January 20, 2017, he and his family moved into the home that at the time belonged to Joe Lockhart, a former press secretary in the Clinton administration.

The house features separate his and hers dressing rooms and bathrooms, entertainment area and a tranquil garden.

It was built in 1928 and features eight bedrooms and nine and a half bathrooms.

A spokesperson for the former president said at the time that the decision to buy the house was an easy one to make.

“Given that President and Mrs. Obama will be in Washington for at least another two and a half years, it made sense for them to purchase a home rather than continue renting real estate,” spokesman Kevin Lewis said in a statement .

According to a Post report at the time, the $8.1 million purchase was the second largest for a home in Kalorama.

Chicago

In 2005, just as Barack’s political career was on the rise with his election to the Illinois Senate, the Obamas paid $1.65 million for a mansion in Chicago’s Kenwood neighborhood.

The house features six bedrooms and six bathrooms spread over 6,243 square feet.

The house is heavily guarded and not much is known about the interior spaces.

The Obamas still own this property, which is often visited by tourists, although they probably haven’t spent much time there since Obama was elected to the White House in 2008.
