March 2016 – Filters

One of the first signs that Facebook was copying Snapchat was in March 2016 when it bought MSQRD, an application that superimposes silly live filters to your selfies.

The application allows users to apply filters to their faces, similar to Snapchat’s ‘Lens’ filters.

April 2016: QR codes

In April of last year, Facebook added QR codes to profiles in Messenger.

Snapchat uses QR codes to allow people to add other users without having to search.

December 2016: filters based on location and camera in the application

Facebook introduced location-based custom camera filters that overlay images and videos, similar to Snapchat’s ‘geo-filters’.

Users create ‘frames’ on any design platform, send them to Facebook and then close friends will have access to the creations.

In the same month, a ‘Messenger Camera’ was designed to make it faster to capture and share photos and videos without having to leave a conversation, a feature that already existed on Snapchat.

The section in the application called ‘Direct’ seems to be very similar to the Snapchat feed for one-to-one group messages.

The update encourages users to use the Facebook camera feature and also allows them to put friend stories on top of their News Feed.

In the same month, he also presented ‘Messenger Day’, which allows the user to share photos and videos with illustrated filters and stickers that disappear in 24 hours, just like Snapchat Stories.

November 2017 – Stripes

In November, Facebook copied Snapchat by testing a new feature that encourages friends to send back and forth messages for consecutive days.

Like ‘Snapstreaks’ on Snapchat, Facebook Messenger’s ‘Streaks’ have emoji next to the name of anyone to whom users regularly send messages.

According to Facebook, this will encourage users to ‘keep their streak going.’

January 2018 – Screenshots

In January, Instagram, the Facebook-owned application, began testing a feature that lets your followers know if you have taken a poaching of their history.

The Snapchat-inspired feature is expected to be released soon on the image sharing platform and is currently being tested in Japan.

May 2018 – Bitmoji

As with filters, snapshots and stories, Facebook revealed that it is doubling the Bitmoji function used in Snapchat.

Within the code of the Facebook Android application, developers have found an unprecedented functionality that allows users to ‘build customized and illustrated versions of themselves to use as stickers in Messenger and comments’.
