A man has died after being restrained by an off-duty police officer and a member of the public.

The 39-year-old man was allegedly armed with a wooden club and appeared to be high on drugs on Morrison Crescent in Kilsyth, in Melbourne’s east, about 11pm on Saturday.

A member of the public and an off-duty police officer restrained him before he became unresponsive.

The officer attempted CPR and treated the man with a defibrillator, but he later died at the hospital.

“Detectives from the Homicide Squad will investigate the incident, under the supervision of Professional Standards Command, which is standard practice when a person dies while in police custody,” a Victoria Police spokesperson said.

“The investigation will include review of body camera footage that captured the incident.”
