A married couple and their 13-year-old grandson were among six people massacred at a construction site in Yuriria, Mexico, on Tuesday.

Six members of two families were massacred at a construction site in the central Mexican state of Guanajuato.

The victims, three male construction workers and relatives, and a couple and their grandson, were shot dead in the municipality of Yuriria on Tuesday.

Yuriria Mayor Maria De Los Angeles told Mexican outlet Milenio that construction workers were working at the site owned by the couple’s family when several gunmen arrived and opened fire.

“Unfortunately, this cowardly act is taking place here in this municipality,” said De Los Ángeles. “It is a scandal for the entire municipality, especially that among those six people who were executed there was a minor and a woman.”

Because the shooting took place in an area outside the city center, the mayor said no one witnessed the shooting.

Authorities were dispatched to the crime scene at around 6 p.m. local time after a local discovered the bodies near a car.

The Guanajuato state attorney general’s office said it is investigating the killings but has not yet arrested any suspects.

While Guanajuato ranks as Mexico’s most dangerous state, with 1,469 murders during the first six months of 2024, Mayor De Los Angeles said Yuriria had been spared until the most recent massacre.

“Yuriria has been calm. Yuriria is a calm municipality,” he said. “Unfortunately, yes, like the whole country, the state experiences situations of insecurity. But (in Yuriria) they are very sporadic.”

Last Friday, gunmen stormed a children’s party and executed four people, including a 10-year-old girl, in the city of Pénjamo.

On Tuesday, gunmen shot and killed a mother who was walking with her two children, ages 4 and 5. The children were injured in the attack and survived.

Authorities have not said whether the three killings were related to cartel violence in a state where the Jalisco New Generation Cartel is at war with local gangs for control of the industrial and agricultural hub.

Mexican security analyst David Saucedo said there is constant cartel activity in towns in southern Guanajuato, bordering the state of Michoacán.

“The attack on entire families is intended to disperse the structures of rival cartels,” he explained. “The idea is that they will not only retaliate against their rivals but also against their families.”
