A mother has revealed how she lost 40 pounds in 12 months after giving birth to her twin daughters – shaving off her appearance for 10 years in the process.

Leah Fragomeni, a 28-year-old mother of three from Perth, weighed 112.5kg in December 2018, before crawling to 127kg during her pregnancy with twins Isla and Mia, now two.

The nurse had been overweight all her life and used food as a “reward” – often without thinking much, she ate whole blocks of chocolate, ice cream cups or bags of chips.

“ I never really participated in a lot of sports and was bullied at school because of my height and after giving birth to my kids, I gained further weight to finish on my toughest, ” she said.

“I often used food as a comfort or reward, and I bought a family block of chocolate on shopping day and ate it all. I often ate half a bag of chips or half a cup of ice cream without thinking much. ‘

Leah, who is also the mother of Isaiah, four, said the difficult reality of having twins and a toddler to run after while obese was what motivated her to get in shape.

The worst part was being overweight during my twin pregnancy. I have experienced a lot of pain, discomfort and reduced mobility, ”she said, adding that she would also avoid having her photo taken out of embarrassment.

What Was Leah’s Diet Before?

Breakfast: Two toasts with melted cheese and tomato Mid-morning

Snack: Coffee and biscuits

Lunch: Takeaway or two rounds of toasted sandwiches Afternoon snack: chips or crackers and cheese

Supper: Usually two servings of a pasta dish or meat and chips

Dessert: A bowl of ice cream

Supper: Whatever the family eats in a smaller portion, but usually meat with vegetables or salad, and a small portion of carbohydrates such as pasta, rice or potatoes

Dessert: A little dark chocolate with no added sugar and a protein shake after the gym when I go

‘My stamina was diminished while I was having the most and it made running around after three kids very difficult. Having the twins was definitely the catalyst for me to lose weight. I knew I had to do it for my kids and to be the best mom I could be. ‘

‘One of the worst things while being so overweight as a mom is that I avoided almost all pictures with my kids. We missed so many events and opportunities because I was so insecure about my body and afraid I would be convicted. ‘

Once she made the decision to make a change, Leah went to a doctor for a consultation about getting a gastric sleeve, but was told she didn’t meet the criteria.

So she had to go it alone and started to strictly track her calories and do walks and body weight workouts on YouTube.

“I had been on a yo-yo diet until March 2020, when I discovered calorie counting,” she said.

‘I eat about 1,500 calories a day and have not excluded anything from my diet. I still enjoy treats almost every day, and I try to eat whole foods as much as possible and generally avoid ‘high-calorie’ foods. ‘

‘When I first started my weight-loss journey, I went for walks when I could and did YouTube workouts while my kids napped. I went to the gym for the first time in my life. I worked with a personal trainer to develop a program of 4-5 strength training sessions per week, combined with cardio. ‘

“Everyone says I look younger than before. I think it has something to do with how I dress and wear now. I dress younger and take better care of myself, ‘she said, adding that she is now studying nutrition.

‘I feel like a totally new person. I can run around with the kids and enjoy sports for the first time. I’m not ashamed of my size in public and it’s so much easier to buy clothes.

‘I just started one Instagram page hoping to inspire others, especially busy moms. It is possible to change your life and it is okay to make yourself a priority. If I can lose weight and change my whole life, anyone can. ‘
