Apple’s digital assistant Siri now handles audio on the device by default, meaning you can use the feature without an internet connection. Apple says the upgrade will also make Siri more responsive.
Processing audio on the device also makes using Siri more personal, Apple says. This follows the company’s established preference for deploying machine learning features on the device, rather than sending data to the cloud.
“This solves the biggest privacy problem we hear from voice assistants, which is unwanted audio recordings,” an Apple presenter said at WWDC.
