Sir David Attenborough discovers the skull of a Jurassic predator in a new BBC show

Date:

Sir David Attenborough discovers the astonishing ‘virtually undamaged’ skull of a ferocious Jurassic predator in his latest BBC show.

The skull of a ferocious Jurassic predator was discovered by Sir David Attenborough in his latest BBC film.

The documentary’s narrator, 96, explores the history of the stunning ocean-going Tyrannosaurus rex that terrorized Dorset’s Jurassic coast millions of years ago.

The creature had a massive 6-foot-long jaw filled with huge, dagger-like teeth, and Sir David revealed that the skull is “virtually undamaged” after all these years.

“The Pliosaurs were the biggest and most formidable hunters of the Jurassic seas—the marine equivalent, you might say, of the T-rex,” he said.

The skull of this one alone is more than two meters long and armed with huge fangs.

Skulls, which can tell us more about the animal, could easily be shattered before fossilization.

“But this one was virtually unharmed and promises to reveal all kinds of new details about these terrifying hunters who preyed on Lyme Regis’ most famous ichthyosaurs.”

Sir David will work with paleontologists to better understand this beast for the BBC1 programme, which is being filmed on location in the UK.

By better understanding the new species of pliosaur, using the skull, experts can discover what the beast looked like, behaved, and hunted.

Executive Producer Mike Gunton said: ‘Sir David’s eyes lit up when we told him about this discovery. He couldn’t wait to join the digs and get a first look.

Jack Bottle, Head of the BBC’s Specialty Reality programme, added that this film promises to be an exciting journey back in time to the moment when monsters took over the seas across Britain.

Attenborough and the Giant Sea Monster are made by the BBC Studios Natural History Unit.

It comes after Sir David was crowned the best British TV presenter of all time, according to a poll conducted last month.

Sir David said: 'The Pliosaurs were the largest and most formidable hunters of the Jurassic seas - the marine equivalent of the T-rex. The skull of this one alone is more than two meters long and armed with huge fangs.
