And now, a year later, Simon Cowell appears to have made a good recovery, as he was seen Friday riding a bike ride in Malibu, California with girlfriend Lauren Silverman.
The 61-year-old X Factor boss raised his thumb as he drove through town on the beach.

In February, Simon said he had broken his back for the first time since the shock incident and revealed, “I almost broke my spine!”
The TV star’s boss admitted he “couldn’t have done it” without girlfriend Lauren and their son Eric, seven, who affectionately referred to him as “iron man” when he first saw his father with metal rods and screws in his back after surgery.
Speaking: In February, Simon spoke to Extra about breaking his back for the first time since his electric bike accident last August: ‘I almost broke my spine!’
Speaking with ex-girlfriend Terri Seymour on AdditionalSimon said at the time: “It could have been a lot worse. When I saw the X-ray, I could have almost smashed my spine, so I literally couldn’t walk.’
He recalled, “I knew I had broken my back the moment I landed. It was very, very sudden and it hurt.’
Simon explained, “You can’t move,” but that wasn’t his train of thought at the time.
He continued: ‘I thought, ‘I have to go back in there because I can’t lie there’… .. And I lie there and I pass out… It was surreal.’

Speaking about his time in the hospital, the BGT judge gushed about the support he received from Lauren and their son.
Simon said to Terri, ‘In fact, you and Lauren [Silverman] were out of the hospital all night, I remember.’
Terri told him, ‘Lauren was great, running after you, making you healthy again’, to which Simon gushed: ‘She was wonderful.
“Both she and Eric were like my support. I wouldn’t have made it through without them, so we got closer.’

Simon explained that his return from the hospital was not easy, and the TV personality was concerned about his son’s reaction.
He said, “The hardest thing was, and I said this to Lauren when I got out of the hospital… I was so embarrassed to come home looking like 100 because I couldn’t walk, and I got these metal bars in my back and these screws…
‘I said, ‘Lauren, I just don’t know how to explain it’ [Eric].’ She was obviously saying something to him because he came in… and I was in bed and he said, ‘Daddy, you’re like Ironman,’ which I liked the most and it meant a lot.”
Simon confessed that the hardest part of the recovery was “the helplessness” that prompted him to make a fitness commitment to himself.
He said, “I’ve never been in this situation in my life where you literally can’t move. The pain was gone… But you have to stay positive…
“I promised myself I would be fitter than I was before the accident. Sure enough, that’s what happened.’

The electric bicycle accident in August last year happened when the powerful machine “flew into the air and accidentally wheelied” after trying to shift gears.
After the accident, Simon tweeted: “A good piece of advice… If you buy an electric trail bike, read the manual before riding it for the first time.”
He continued: ‘I broke part of my back. Thank you everyone for your kind messages.’
He then added in a second tweet: “And a huge thank you to all the nurses and doctors. Some of the nicest people I’ve ever met. Stay safe everyone, Simon.’
