Should Manchester United hire Gareth Southgate? YOUR COMMENTS after reports claimed Sir Jim Ratcliffe is ‘confident of luring the England boss to Old Trafford’

England manager Gareth Southgate is reportedly Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s No.1 choice to replace Erik ten Hag at Manchester United this summer.

Ratcliffe is growing increasingly confident in his ability to lure Southgate to Old Trafford after his sports team INEOS interviewed United legends, according to the Daily Star Tuesday.

They claim Southgate, who has been England boss since 2016, has the support of some of United’s current players – as well as new director of football Dan Ashworth.

However, looking at your comments, it’s clear that some United fans disagree with the sentiment that Southgate would be a wise appointment.

“His only achievement in club football is getting M’brough relegated. An ultra-conservative manager with a severe lack of imagination is the last thing UTD needs,” one user wrote.

‘Does FGS have a death wish. I can’t think of a worse guy to handle them. They need a strong and energetic character to stand up to the rubbish players who think they are running the club. Yea man, Southgate would soon join their gang or go under,” said another.

“Oh my god, are you laughing. I’m not Ten Hag’s biggest fan at all, but he’s way above Southgate as a manager,” one user wrote.

Despite struggling with the spelling of “Ratcliffe”, this fan wrote: “Is it April 1st already??? Well, Mr. Radcliffe showed a complete lack of judgment. Southgate would be a disaster. A poll has already shown that 93% of United fans don’t want him. It doesn’t bode well for the future if Radcliffe thinks it’s a good idea.”

Reflecting on the current crop of England stars, another user wrote: “Southgate has been fortunate that Harry Kane and other quality players have excelled under his watch.

“He was also extremely lucky in the draw, generally avoiding the top teams. We saw how good he was at Middlesbrough and he is also very negative in his tactics. United are welcome at home.

In a lengthy and scathing review of the situation, another user said: “The last thing United need is a manager who hasn’t won anything, plays boring, unattractive football and doesn’t ‘has zero tactical ability – and don’t get me started on his reluctance.’ making substitutions and the fact that when he does, he tends to take out attacking players and call on defenders. And this applies even when his team is trailing and needs to score.

“Well it’s Harry Maguire back in the first team every week,” wrote another bluntly.

Southgate, who has managed England since 2016, has refused to discuss his future beyond the Euros – but Ratcliffe is understandably keen to make a decision quickly.

Despite reaching the FA Cup semi-finals and remaining in the race for next season’s Champions League qualification, new co-owner Ratcliffe is not convinced Ten Hag is the man which will take United forward.

Ten Hag would pocket up to £10million in compensation if he is sacked a year before his United contract expires in 2025.

Southgate’s England are among favorites to win Euro 2024 after the former Middlesbrough and England Under-21 boss led them to the 2018 World Cup semi-finals and final of Euro 2020.
