A frustrated shopper accused of stealing a pepper from a Coles self-service checkout has taken to social media to vent her anger at the supermarket giant’s poor customer service.

Recently, Jade Zane walked into the store to purchase a few items. When she got to the checkout, her hands were full and there were only self-service checkouts available.

She dropped everything off at the weighing section, scanned her items, and when she was down to two, grabbed the zucchini and entered the code for the bell pepper before the machine stopped working.

Ms Zane called a Coles staff member who came to help her, when she scanned the machine a video appeared of what she had done.

She said the staff member then accused her of “trying to steal,” which he said could be seen in the drive-thru video.

He eventually apologized to the woman, saying, “Oh, I’m sorry, you’re right,” after she explained that she was holding the zucchini while scanning the pepper.

“Who the fuck are you to accuse someone of stealing if you haven’t seen them first?” Zane said.

‘Also, if they don’t want people to steal, they should open a cash register where people are actually served. That would be a great idea.’

The video has gone viral and has received over a thousand comments from buyers.

‘The Coles camera always captures my bag looking like it’s a roast chicken,’ one person said.

“I went to Coles in Victoria Gates and they wouldn’t let me in until I looked up because I had a baseball cap on,” another person commented.

“I’m sick of the people who work there standing behind me and staring at me while I do their job and scan my purchases,” one person said.

“The camera always marks my son sitting in the stroller as an unscanned object, my son,” wrote another.

“That would have been the last straw. As soon as he told me I was stealing, I would have dropped everything and walked away,” one person said.

‘Coles and Woolies treat their customers like peasants, we all queue to scan and bag our own items while they look at us like we’re potential thieves,’ commented another.
