A women’s college soccer game briefly descended into madness Sunday when two opponents brawled with each other.
Rutgers traveled to UMass for an afternoon matchup and chaos broke out after the Scarlet Knights’ Gia Girman fouled an opponent from behind in the 55th minute.
UMass player Ashley Lamond’s teammate tried to take the free throw quickly, but she and Girman became entangled as the former tried to grab the ball.
From there, Lamond pushed Girman before they threw punches in both directions and Girman threw his opponent to the ground.
Girman continued to beat Lamond while on top of her, as Lamond pulled her opponent’s hair in an ugly scene.
Rutgers’ Gia Girman (No. 2) and UMass’ Ashley Lamond got into a tangle after the former fouled a UMass player.
The pair exchanged blows and Girman threw Lamond to the ground in a truly shocking scene.
Lamond pulled Girman’s hair on the ground before they both received their marching orders.
Players on both sides rushed to separate the pair.
In the end, both Girman and Lamond were ejected and both teams had to play with 10 players for the final 35 minutes of the match.
The hosts eventually won 1-0 after a goal from Bella Recinos in the 81st minute.
UMass earned its first win of the season with this result, moving to 1-2-0.
Rutgers is now 1-1-1.
