Shocking racist insult against a football player goes viral, while an investigation begins

An investigation has been launched after a spectator hurled a racist abuse at a rugby league player in New South Wales during a match between Thirlmere and Campbelltown Collegians.

A Collegians player of Polynesian descent is understood to have been the victim of the alleged abuse during the match which was broadcast live on YouTube after the team’s victory at Thirlmere Sports Ground.

A female voice is heard in the crowd shouting “go back to your ship,” among other profanities.

The Thirlmere club took to Facebook to confirm that an investigation into the incident has been launched, “with the assistance of the NSWRL”.

“The club strongly opposes and denounces any form of racial slur or comments that defame an individual or a culture, on or off the field, and will take serious action in the coming days.

An investigation has been launched after a rugby league player suffered alleged racial abuse.

‘We have supported and will always support fair and equitable sporting spirit. We do not and will not tolerate behavior like this from a person or group that goes against our club and Group 6 values.

“The Club can assure you that this matter is being seriously investigated and action is being taken with the assistance of the NSWRL.”

The video clip was shared on Facebook and has been viewed 250,000 times, with shocked fans expressing their disbelief at the comment.

A NSWRL spokesperson said: “The NSWRL is investigating an alleged defamation incident involving spectators at a Macarthur Premiership match between Thirlmere Roosters and Campbelltown Collegians on Sunday, April 28.

‘Both clubs are assisting the NSWRL with their investigation. The NSWRL and the clubs involved do not tolerate any form of defamation.

“No further comment will be made until the investigation is concluded.”
