This is the shocking moment an impatient driver crashes his truck into a lion as it crosses the road to get through.

Shocking footage shows several cars stopped on a highway in South Africa’s Kruger National Park on August 9 as they try to overtake three lionesses.

But while most drivers on the H1-4 between Satara and Olifants rest camps stopped to marvel at the big cats, one motorist was less concerned by their presence.

In his rush to get past, the driver of a Toyota Land Cruiser SUV with a caravan in tow manoeuvred around one vehicle but then hit one of the lionesses from behind.

It is not yet clear whether the act was deliberate, but the driver has been fined, a Kruger National Park spokesman said.

A clip of the incident was posted on social media, prompting a response from national park authorities.

Kruger National Park spokesman Ike Phaahla said: ‘We are dealing with it by tracing the number plate.

“All we know is that he was trying to get through when he saw the animal when he collided with it.”

Mr Phaahla added that he was not sure how much the fine imposed on the driver was, but local media reported that the maximum fine is £64 or R1,500.

South African National Parks (SANParks) also commented on the incident, saying: ‘Please be advised that the incident of a vehicle colliding with a lioness during a sighting in Kruger National Park has been resolved.

“Action was taken as soon as we became aware of the incident. Thank you for bringing the matter to our attention.”

SANParks rules state that harming animals is strictly prohibited. The man’s identity has not been revealed.
