This is the shocking moment a hooded thug steals a bicycle from London’s Canada Water.

A young man dressed all in black, with his hood up and a PPE mask hiding his face, was filmed yesterday stealing a bicycle outside a train station in south London.

He is seen easily tearing the bike off the rack to which it is chained with a bar and carelessly throwing it onto the road along with the helmet.

Then he and another man dressed in black with a mask leave on bicycles.

When the spectator approached, he said: ‘You are absolute…what are you doing?’

The cyclist then looks back and yells “shut up bro” as he walks away and the cameraman calls him “trash.”

Posting the images on X, the man said: ‘9am this morning at Canada Water. Very sad for the owner of this bike.

It didn’t take much to twist it with a bar. Apparently they are there every day.

“I know there’s no point in challenging them or security, etc., but it’s still wrong.”

Commenting on social media, concerned viewers advised the cameraman not to intervene for their safety.

Another said: “I would never leave a bike chained anywhere in London for more than 20 seconds unless I was looking at it.” The same thing happens in Greenwich: I’ve seen them with bolt cutters and bicycles stolen in a matter of seconds on a busy street.

According to Statista, a bicycle was stolen every seven minutes in England and Wales last year, amounting to more than 77,000 thefts.

But a survey by Cycling UK suggested the figure could be as high as 237,000.

Last month, the Lib Dems pointed out that almost 90 per cent of all reported bike thefts go unsolved, while only one in 50 results in a person being charged.

Of the thefts officially reported in the last five years, 350,000 did not result in any convictions.

The Liberal Democrats called for a return to “proper community policing”.

The party’s home affairs spokesman, Alistair Carmichael, said: “These shocking figures will leave people wondering whether bike theft has been decriminalised.”

‘Whether used for commuting, family days out or exercise, bicycles are a valuable possession.

“So bike thefts leave victims feeling distraught and broke, and knowing that the thief will probably get away with it only adds insult to injury.”

He added: “Years of negligence under this Conservative government have emboldened criminals and left frontline police officers without the resources they need to properly investigate crimes such as bike theft.”

“The government needs to restore community policing where police are visible in their neighborhoods and can focus on solving local crimes.”

Police Minister Chris Philp said: “The Liberal Democrats can never be trusted to reduce crime or keep communities safe.”

‘They want to strip our police officers of vital powers and voted against tougher sentences for the worst offenders.

‘The Conservatives have reduced the number of theft crimes by 47 per cent since 2010, including bicycle theft by 54 per cent, reduced violent crime by 52 per cent and put a record number of police officers in on our streets to keep our communities safe.

“While the Lib Dems shout from the sidelines, we are making difficult, long-term decisions to reduce crime and keep people safe.”
