This is the shocking moment a good Samaritan tried to shoot dead a suspected car thief before being shot and killed by the man.

Jonathan Adam Lecompte, 38, died after being run over and thrown into the air by the stolen vehicle after firing four shots at a car thief outside a Burger King.

The incident occurred last month in Lumberton, North Carolina, after police say Ricky Alex Driggers, 28, stole a vehicle and then hit Lecompte.

Authorities charged Driggers with first-degree murder, two counts of attempted common law robbery, larceny of a motor vehicle and felony fleeing and eluding.

Footage of the incident, which has been shared widely on social media, shows Lecompte pointing a firearm at Driggers moments before he was shot.

Lumberton Police Department officers later caught up with Driggers, who fled the scene after he wrecked the vehicle on a highway.
