A Florida high school student and her family are accusing police of using excessive force after video emerged of an officer throwing her to the ground.

The teenager then stands up again, causing the officer to grab her again. Police have accused her of trying to punch the officer.

Talking with WPLG Local10Tate said: “He should never have done that. He grabbed me and threw me to the ground and one of them stepped on my hair.”

The teen also claimed she never hit the officer, adding: “I wasn’t punching him. I was telling him to get away from me.”

His mother, Monique Warner, also came forward and said she believes the officer went too far.

Warner told the outlet: “I feel like I shouldn’t have done that to my daughter. If anything, I should have tried to restrain her in a better way.”

“You shouldn’t put your hands on anyone’s children like that. You’re supposed to help them. That’s why children are afraid of the law.”

In an arrest report viewed by the outlet, Miami-Dade Schools said Tate pushed a sergeant who responded to the incident and then attempted to punch the officer in the face.

The police report also notes that Tate “became aggressive, tensed up and pulled away. The defendant continued to fight back and attempted to strike the sergeant with a closed fist.”

Tate was arrested and charged with assault on a law enforcement officer, resisting arrest and disrupting a school function.

The teenager is currently under house arrest and is only allowed out for school, medical reasons, church or in case of emergency.

According to Miami-Dade School Police, they are investigating the incident.
