A Brazilian man is in police custody after authorities discovered his wife’s body covered in cement inside a wooden box in their home.
Douglas Lopes, 43, turned himself in to the São Paulo Civil Police on Wednesday night and confessed to having killed Amanda Gaspar, 43, his partner of 13 years.
Gaspar had not been seen since Saturday and was found dead Tuesday night after authorities received an anonymous report of a bad smell coming from the couple’s home in the Paraisópolis neighborhood of São Paulo.
Lopes’ lawyer, Vicente da Silva, told Record TV that Lopes hit Gaspar, punching and kicking him before he fell, hit the back of his head on a chair and died.

The police visited the couple’s home on Tuesday after receiving an anonymous complaint and discovered the lifeless body of Amanda Gaspar covered in concrete.
He added that his client was scared at that moment and decided to pour water, lime, bleach and chlorine on Gaspar’s body, which he wrapped with bags and blankets before covering him with cement.
Lopes put the body inside a wooden box in his living room and left the house.
“He did not try to hide the body from the courts, but from the community, because the law prevails according to which a man who kills his wife has no arguments,” da Silva said.
Neighbors told police that the couple fought constantly. Gaspar was beaten for almost 10 years, her sister told investigators.

According to his attorney, Douglas Lopes punched and kicked Amanda Gaspar before she fell and hit her head on a chair. The lawyer said Lopes poured water, lime, bleach and chlorine over the body of his wife, who was covered with a blanket and a bag before covering her with cement.

The troubled couple owned a bakery that they opened in 2020 and posted photos of their happy moments on social media.
Police records obtained by Brazilian news outlet Metropoles showed that Lopes had received four complaints against him for physical and verbal assault against women since 2016.
Lopes had also been arrested and convicted in the past for robbery, assault and embezzlement.
He was also a fugitive since March 2023 after being charged in a separate embezzlement case.
