This is the shocking moment a Boeing passenger plane’s engine caught fire after taking off from an Italian airport.
The packed Hainan Airlines flight was headed to the Chinese city of Shenzen on Sunday when the Boeing 787 was forced to make an emergency landing at Rome’s Fiumicino airport.
The plane’s right engine burst into flames after takeoff, with 249 passengers and 16 crew members on board.
Footage of the moment shows the plane rising into the sky before an orange flash appears on the side of the machine.
Within seconds, multiple flames could be seen emerging from the engine as the Boeing continued on its course.

The plane was reportedly hit by a bird in mid-flight, the Italian Coast Guard said in a statement following the terrifying incident.
But the Boeing plane quickly turned around and made a safe landing after spilling fuel into the sea.
There were no delays in air traffic at Fiumicino, an Italian airport official confirmed.
It comes after a Boeing 737-500 plane, bound for the city of Wamena, caught fire on Tuesday at Sentani Airport in Jayapura, Papua province, Indonesia, forcing its 121 passengers to evacuate.
Terrifying footage shows smoke billowing from the plane’s engine, while another clip captured the moment petrified passengers had to stand on the plane’s wing as they waited their turn to get off.
People on board the plane were also seen sliding down an inflatable emergency slide, while screams and sirens sounded in the background.
A passenger reportedly noticed the fire and panicked, prompting him to open the emergency door while shouting at other travelers.
The flight was reportedly canceled and two others were delayed due to the fire.
In June, an Air Canada Boeing plane burst into flames seconds after takeoff.
The plane turned around and landed safely at Rome’s Fiumicino airport.
Video footage showed the plane gaining altitude before a light flashed on the right engine and the tail of the plane became engulfed in flames, the result of a small explosion.
The ordeal took place thirty minutes after departure, as the plane was leaving Toronto’s Pearson Airport bound for Paris, France.
No crew members or the flight’s 389 passengers were injured and the crew landed the plane safely.
Three months earlier, the engines of a Boeing plane exploded and caught fire in the skies over Texas, forcing an emergency landing.
The terrifying incident took place just minutes into a United Airlines flight bound for Fort Myers, Florida.
Video taken from the passenger window shows white-hot flashes coming from the 737’s jet engine.
Moments later, they were forced to make an emergency landing and return to Houston’s George H. Bush Intercontinental Airport moments after takeoff.
No injuries were reported in the incident.
