A driver who stopped his car in the middle of a highway to urinate outraged motorists who called the move “a death waiting to happen.”
The photo, posted on Facebook on Tuesday, showed a blue Havel sitting on the Pacific Highway in Queensland’s Gold Coast with its door wide open.
A man with a long blonde ponytail and dressed casually in black shorts appears meters away on the edge of a busy road as cars and trucks slow down to avoid an accident.
‘Absolute Flog stops in the middle of the M1 and does this. Sadly, that’s why we have deaths,” wrote the original poster of the image.
The photo, posted on Facebook on Tuesday, showed a blue Havel sitting on the Pacific Highway in Queensland’s Gold Coast with its door wide open.
Another person wrote: “We couldn’t believe our eyes.”
“The traffic was slow, but it wasn’t stopped and he wasn’t in any hurry either.”
Others, however, took a very different view.
‘Nature waits for no one… just out of interest, how much did this delay your life? Six car lengths? Good for him,’ one person said.
Urinating in a public place is an offense under the Summary Offenses Act 2005 in Queensland law.
The maximum fine is $266.
Dangerous or no big deal? Drivers were divided on social media over whether it was okay to stop a car in the middle of a lane to answer the call of nature.
A Queensland Police spokesperson told Daily Mail Australia that the act of stopping a car in the middle of a lane was illegal.
“Except in an emergency, stopping on the motorway is illegal and poses a significant risk to other road users,” they stated.
The spokesperson said stopping can cause collisions that can lead to “serious injuries and deaths” and police are urging drivers to follow traffic rules to keep everyone safe.
A Queensland Police spokesperson said there have been no arrests or charges at this time regarding the man in the photo and police are asking any witnesses or people with dashcam footage to come forward.
