A Canadian man has been caught at an Australian airport allegedly trying to smuggle up to 15kg of methamphetamine into the country in his suitcase.
Australian Border Force (ABF) officers confiscated the 38-year-old’s luggage at Sydney International Airport when he arrived from Vancouver, Canada, on July 31.
A powdered substance was allegedly found in several vacuum-sealed bags wrapped in a bath towel and testing revealed it to be methamphetamine.
Australian Federal Police (AFP) have arrested the man accused of importing a commercial quantity of a border-controlled drug.
He now faces the maximum penalty of life in prison.
AFP acting inspector Dom Stephenson said the amount seized “could have represented around 150,000 individual visits”.
The Canadian was refused bail at Downing Center Local Court on August 1 and was scheduled to appear at the same court on Wednesday.
