Motorists have been told to expect significant delays after a B-double truck overturned just meters from fuel tanks in a servo on the Hume Highway.

NSW Rural Fire Service and NSW Fire and Rescue crews have been on the scene since mid-morning on Friday after the huge truck overturned just meters from the fuel tanks at a Sutton Servo Forest in the Southern Highlands.

Firefighters and HAZMAT specialists have been working to ensure the area is safe and remove fuel from the truck.

Attending officers were told the truck, which was carrying pet food, overturned while attempting to turn.

The driver, 51, was treated by paramedics for non-life-threatening head lacerations and was rushed to Liverpool Hospital.

Social media lit up with reaction to the incident, but an Australian who claimed to have witnessed the moment was quick to defend the driver.

“We were at the scene and he wasn’t speeding,” she wrote online.

“He had a medical problem, but with good driving he managed to prevent the truck from hitting the Bowsers. It could have been much worse.
