Stone initially adopted Roan with her then-husband Phil Bronstein.
The couple divorced after six years of marriage in 2004, when Roan was only four years old. This resulted in a California judge granting the exes joint custody.
Stone, then newly single, made plans to make Los Angeles her primary residence, while the former couple agreed that their son would primarily live with Bronstein in San Francisco during the school year.
But then in 2008, Stone questioned the deal and tried to move Roan to Los Angeles with her, but her request was denied.
Despite the distance between them during school time, mother and son remained close throughout their childhood.
Stone shared about the emotional toll the custody battle took on her psyche during an appearance on the Table For Two With Bruce Bozzi podcast.
“I ended up at the Mayo Clinic with extra beats in the upper and lower chambers of my heart,” she shared in 2023, before adding that it “broke my heart.”
Roan ended up having two siblings following his parents’ divorce, starting with 19-year-old Laird in 2005, followed by the third child, 17-year-old Quinn, a year later.
