Shakespeare shows up at Blenheim Palace: the Rose Theater reigns supreme this summer, along with a thatched pub, wagons and singing minstrels
- This pop-up three-row, 13-sided theater is based on the Rose Theater from 1587
- Tour the palace and then take a seat in one of the legendary plays of Shakespeare
- Mark Palmer was there for Macbeth's opening night and found the whole experience exciting
Pop-ups to the left of us, pop-ups to the right of us. But no one is as ambitious as the Rose Theater of Shakespeare, which was founded after its success in York last year on the grounds of Blenheim Palace in Oxfordshire.
What a day out. Arrive in beautiful Woodstock for lunch, then a tour of Blenheim Palace (seat of the Dukes of Marlborough and birthplace of Winston Churchill) followed by a production of & # 39; the Scottish play & # 39; Macbeth, A Midsummer Night & Dream, Romeo & Juliet or Richard III.
We were there for the opening night of Macbeth and found the whole experience more exciting, comfortable and cheaper than an evening at London's Globe Theater. The pop-up, the brainchild of Yorkshire impresario James Cundall, consists of a threefold, 13-sided Elizabethan theater, with the 1587 Rose Playhouse in London as a template.

Mark writes: & # 39; it looks spectacular and sits in a pop-up village in Tudor, complete with minstrels, wagons and a thatched pub that sells food and drink at reasonable prices & # 39;
Spectacular: the management team and the actors declare the theater and the village open

We were in the second row.
Among us, those with & # 39; Groundling & # 39; tickets (£ 15) were often part of the promotion as the cast pushed its way through the standing crowd – some people lay down on their backs and looked horizontally.
Difficulties and problems: the Macbeth cast of the Rose Theater during the opening night at Blenheim Palace
This photo shows a performance by Romeo & Juliet. The theater was built using advanced scaffolding technology, corrugated iron and wood
The theater accommodates an audience of 900, with 560 sitting on three layered balconies around an open-covered courtyard, with standing space for 340 & # 39; earthlings & # 39 ;. The theater is shown midway through the construction
Anyone who loves Game Of Thrones will love this production of Macbeth, with its crazy costumes, weird witches and horrific murders.
Towards the end of the night, blood occupied much of the stage while power, ambition, and greed were cut into small pieces in various ways.
How reassuring in such a setting to hear Macbeth's great speech that reminds us that & # 39; life is just a walking shadow, a poor player, putting his hour on stage and pounding and then no longer being heard & # 39 ;. Well, we certainly hope that this excellent theater group will pop up again and more will be heard.
