Shai Bolton may have missed at close quarters against Port last weekend, but the Richmond star showed his confidence was still sky high with a very brutal taunt from a similar position against Carlton.

Bolton was back at his scintillating best in Thursday’s win over the Blues, with Damien Hardwick’s side fighting off a late flurry to take back-to-back victories in the AFL.

However, the 23-year-old little attacker divided opinion in the fourth term when he picked up a crumb within 50, shot past Sam Durden before descending on goal.

As veteran defender Sam Docherty gave chase, Bolton gave chase to get ahead of his rival and, knowing the Carlton man had no chance to stop him, stretched his left arm back with the ball in hand to to tease his rival.

Docherty couldn’t help but grin at the sight of a beaming Bolton getting the better of him, and the pair spoke a few words after the match – presumably about that particular incident.

Angry Blues supporters, however, took to Twitter to fire the confident young gun, while 2018 premiership winner Will Schofield suggested that Bolton might have deserved a “clip” for his antics many years ago.

“Shai Bolton is lucky not to play in the 80s,” he tweeted. ‘Dirty behavior, well deserved a clip around the ears.’

One Carlton fan tweeted: ‘Doc was too good a dude but really wished he had Bolton decked out after doing that before kicking the goal.’

Hawthorn legend Jason Dunstall expressed his disapproval of Bolton’s actions on Fox Footy, but admitted he loved how the 23-year-old got to talk to Docherty at the final siren.

“You can interpret it however you like,” he said. “I love that they got together after the game and this was Shai Bolton who probably came up to him and said, ‘Look, I got a little carried away in the heat of the moment, no hard feelings’.

“Even if you watch the replay, Docherty is half smiling. Not at the time, but I like the sportiness afterwards.’
