Sha’Carri Richardson had to settle for silver in the Olympic women’s 100m final, while Julien Alfred took gold with an impressive performance.
Watched by her grandmother, Betty Harp, known as Big Momma, Richardson ran 10.87 in the rain in Paris.
But the world champion, who missed the Tokyo Games after testing positive for THC (a component of marijuana), was unable to catch Alfred, who claimed St Lucia’s first Olympic medal.
American Melissa Jefferson finished third, taking bronze with a time of 10.92.
Hours earlier, two-time Olympic champion Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce of Jamaica withdrew from the women’s 100-meter race before the semifinals.
The 37-year-old, who won the event in 2008 and 2012, was scheduled to race in the same series as Richardson and Alfred.
She has previously said Paris will be her last Olympics, but gave no immediate reason for withdrawing.
