Severe thunderstorms and a heatwave to batter Australia – what the weather is like in Sydney, Brisbane, Melbourne and more

Severe weather systems along the east and north coast have led millions of Australians to prepare for severe storms, while others have to sweat through a ferocious heatwave.

Strong storms will hit Australia’s east coast, while a heatwave will bring scorching temperatures to the country’s north.

The Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) on Tuesday forecast a storm system that would extend along the east coast to Gladstone in Queensland and the Hunter region of New South Wales.

The most severe storms are expected to hit areas close to the border, such as the Gold Coast and Byron Bay, on Tuesday before the system moves inland.

BOM senior meteorologist Miriam Bradbury told Daily Mail Australia the severe storm is not “ordinary” and could bring dangerous conditions to the region.

Bradbury warned of winds “strong enough to knock down tree branches and power lines”, heavy rain that would cause flash flooding and hail more than 2cm wide.

The low trough that causes storms is also causing heatwaves on Australia’s northern coast.

Bradbury said the climate system acts differently in more northern regions and has instead become stuck in sweltering conditions.

The warm weather is expected to intensify throughout the week and another system is expected to sweep through and break the heat wave.

Severe weather systems along the east and north coast have led millions of Australians to prepare for severe storms, while others have to sweat through a ferocious heatwave.

Bradbury said there would still be heavy rain in coastal areas, while the potential for a severe storm would remain dangerous for parts of central Queensland and the southern hinterland on Wednesday.

However, the risk factor is expected to decrease later in the week as it moves away from populated areas and loses power.

Bradbury explained that the very different weather systems were partly due to Australia’s large size, which allowed numerous patterns to occur at once.

The bureau also issued a series of wind warnings for the Byron Coast, Coffs Coast, Macquarie Coast and Hunter Coast in New South Wales on Tuesday.

Those warnings are expected to disappear on Wednesday, when the Moreton Bay and Gold Coast regions of Queensland experience high winds.

Sheep herders in inland areas of New South Wales have been warned that cold temperatures, rain and winds could lead to livestock loss.

Coastal areas of northern New South Wales and southern Queensland are expected to be hit by severe storms on Tuesday, followed by heavy rain on Wednesday as the system moves inland.
