The Bureau of Meteorology issued a severe thunderstorm warning shortly after 3:00 pm local time on Monday.

Strong storms are causing heavy rain which may cause flash flooding in the coming hours in Gosford, Sydney, Penrith, Parramatta, Campbelltown and Taralga.

At around 3.40pm the Met Office provided an update, saying that severe thunderstorms in the warning area had temporarily eased.

‘However, recovery from severe storms remains possible. “The situation is being closely monitored and further detailed warnings will be issued if necessary,” the warning reads.

By 3.30pm, the Canterbury office rain gauge had received more than 23mm of rain since 9am.

A large area between Tamworth and Muswellbrook has also recorded more than 10mm of rain since 9am
