A gunman opened fire in a German lecture hall today, injuring several people.

A man armed with a long rifle shot several people at a university in the southwestern German city of Heidelberg, police said.

The attacker himself is dead, officials confirmed, as police officers swarmed Neuenheimer Feld, an area of ​​the city mostly made up of buildings associated with the University of Heidelberg.

The university’s natural science facilities and parts of the teaching hospital are mainly located in Neuenheimer Feld.

Mannheim police said in a statement: “Large-scale operation in Neuenheimer Feld. This is known so far: A single perpetrator injured several people in a lecture hall with a long gun.

‘The perpetrator himself is dead. Colleagues are still on the ground with strong troops – we’ll give more information here!’

Police had previously urged drivers to bypass Neuenheimer Feld so rescuers and emergency services could travel freely and respond to the shooting.
