Lingerie is in my blood – my mother was British bra designer Janet Reger and I spent my childhood playing with pieces of lace and cotton in the family’s factories in Derbyshire and Paddington, London.
Today I am running the business and I am very happy that the bra fitting services have finally restarted.
Due to the pandemic, women have not been able to get a proper fit for a bra for months, which means there are a lot of sagging straps and cups with holes.
Yes, you can buy online, but a fit is crucial when it comes to a bra. Just a millimeter can make all the difference whether it is comfortable or not, or whether you get the right support you need.
Aliza Reger, whose mother was Janet Reger, the British bra designer, shared a guide to the seven pieces you need for a lingerie wardrobe
But while the country’s underwear drawer hasn’t been replenished, the lingerie industry has continued to innovate. From high-tech lace to super supportive sports models, new technologies make bras more comfortable and beautiful than ever.
There’s nothing like new lingerie to cheer you up, so keep going, embrace the post-lockdown bravolution!
Here’s my guide to the seven pieces you need to build the ultimate lingerie wardrobe.
Aliza said everyone needs a once-in-a-lifetime investment bra. La Perla Maison silk bra, £ 345 LaPerla.com
1. THE TIMELESS CLASSIC
Everyone needs a once-in-a-lifetime investment bra and La Perla stands for quality. With such an expensive bra, it is essential to wash it gently. I put all my bras together in a lingerie bag, to wash on a cycle of no higher than 30 degrees, with a mild detergent.
Always air dry your lingerie on a rack – never use the dryer. If you take good care of a La Perla bra and reserve the piece for special occasions, it will last 20 years. The Chanel handbag with bras, this is a classic. Choose pink or black, it works great with an equally timeless LBD.
2. SUPER LACE GIVES SUPPORT
Janet Reger’s High Apex Plunge bra at kaleidoscope.co.uk has the right amount of support yet light, Aliza said.
High Apex Plunge Bra, £ 23, Janet Reger with caleidoscope.co.uk
This beautiful bra is perfect if you trade sportswear for summer dresses. It has just the right amount of support yet is lightweight, thanks to the high-tech stretch lace. The material regains its shape after washing, retains its color well and fits very well. It gently holds you in all the right places while still being comfortable.
Unlike a balcony bra that runs straight across the bust and gives an ‘M’ shape, this plunging model with high apex breasts gives a natural ‘V’. It would go well with a deep top or a wrap dress.
Bridal collections are perfect for good quality sexy white bras and you don’t have to be a bride to get one
Shock Absorber’s Extreme Impact Bra (£ 32.25) is an essential part of any woman’s sports gear
3. NOT JUST BRILLIANT FOR BRIDES
You don’t have to be a bride to shop the bridal assortments; they are perfect for good quality sexy white bras. White never has to be boring either. It’s sheer, fresh and looks fantastic on most skin tones.
For functional bridal pieces, Wacoal makes a strapless bra that fits perfectly under delicate summer dresses and tops. The Halo Lace design is wonderfully feminine and romantic, creating a flattering ‘M’ shape. Think of Phoebe Dynevor’s character, Daphne, in Bridgerton.
4. BEST SPORTS BRA EVER
This Extreme Impact bra from Shock Absorber is essential for any woman’s sports gear, especially those with larger breasts. It is perfect for high impact sports that involve running or jumping. And because of the high elastane content in the cup design, these bras have very good resistance and great coverage. I especially like the picante pink in this range.
5. WORKOUT WEAR THAT LOOKS GOOD
Aliza said a good workout starts with a great sports bra to protect the ligaments in your chest that can get damaged if unsupported, as well as speed up the dreaded sag bra.
Aliza recommends Sweaty Betty’s bra tops for lower impact activities like yoga or Pilates
Sweaty Betty is catnip for every midlife woman right now. I recommend his bra tops for lower impact activities like yoga or pilates where breasts are less likely to be strained by a high-impact sport like running. A good workout starts with a great sports bra and this one combines my love for good color with the need for a supportive design. I am passionate about the importance of a good bra.
This is vital not only for comfort, but also to protect the ligaments in your chest, which can be damaged if unsupported, and to speed up the dreaded sagging. You need to make sure that you renew your bras regularly as the first thing that is out of date is the elastane material. With bad elastane, you run the risk of damaging the ligaments in your breasts.
Aliza said lace, luxury and femininity will be at the forefront of everyday dressing this summer and said she would keep buying sexy bras
6. KEEP BUYING SEXIES
I went to Ann Summers two years ago and was surprised by the quality of their bras, so much so that I now have a Janet Reger collection in the store. Although this bra is not mine, I love it because it is super glamorous and exudes luxury.
I believe there will be an explosion of life this summer and we will dress up and have fun like we haven’t in a long time. Lace, luxury and femininity are central to everyday clothing. Available in black or red, this set is priced so favorably that you can treat yourself with either color.
7. BEAUTIFUL SUMMER PASTEL
Bra, £ 28, briefs, £ 14, Rosie range at marksandspencer.com
I’ve always loved Marks & Spencer’s lingerie. It’s such a big company, it can produce high quality bras for a low price, and this Silk & Lace bra, in pistachio, is all about the summer.
I love to match my lingerie with my outerwear and I have seen a lot of pastel colored lingerie this year, especially in ice colors to pair with your summer dresses. It’s a great looking bra, with a great shape and at a great price. Clearly another winner of M&S.
