Seth Rogen on comics complaining about culture cancellation: ‘If you’ve made a joke that’s terribly outdated, accept it’

Emmy-nominated writer Seth Rogen recently weighed in on cancellation culture and why comedians shouldn’t be complaining about it.

“ I think there are certain jokes that are certainly not well out of date, but I think that’s the nature of comedy, ” the 39-year-old Freaks and Geeks alum told ITV’s Good morning Great Britain on Monday.

‘I think those films are conceptually sound and I think there is a reason why they lasted. Jokes aren’t necessarily built to last. ‘

Seth continued, “When I see comedians complaining about things like this, I don’t understand what they’re complaining about. If you’ve made a joke that is terribly out of date, accept it. And if you think it’s not terribly old, say so. ‘

Rogen said that being criticized is “one of the things that comes with being an artist, and if you don’t like that, stop being a comedian.”

When asked if he ever felt the need to go back and delete tone-deaf tweets from his own account, the Canadian comedian – with 23 million social media followers – said no.

“I’ve never been a comedian who made jokes that were really meant to target groups that were in some way subjugated,” Seth shrugged.

Did we do that without realizing it? Surely. And those things are in our movies and they are there, and they are things that I’m more than happy to say haven’t aged properly. But on my Twitter, I’ve never made a joke that is somehow outwardly gruesome.

And if you did, I would wonder why you did that. Saying awful things is bad, so if you’ve said something awful, it’s something you need to confront in some way, shape, or form. I don’t think that will override the culture. That is that you say something terrible when you have done that. ‘
