Ramos, who himself left Madrid for a transfer to PSG earlier this summer after his remarkable 16-year stint with the club, paid tribute to his former central defender on Instagram.

“Dear Rapha, I can only thank you for these years of friendship, camaraderie and triumphs,” Ramos said on his Instagram story, alongside a photo of the couple celebrating with the LaLiga title.

‘And wish you every success in a new phase that is sure to be exciting.’

Ramos then joked: ‘When we face each other, always with your country’s team, right? Be careful.’

The pair forged a formidable partnership as centre-back for the Spanish giants when Varane joined the club from Lens in 2011.

The mid-back duo won three LaLiga titles, four Champions Leagues, four FIFA Club World Cups, three UEFA Super Cups and one Copa del Rey crown.

Varane’s imminent arrival at Old Trafford has been met with great anticipation from United fans, with the club following up on Borussia Dortmund’s £73 million purchase of Jadon Sancho.

United finished second behind rivals Manchester City in the Premier League last season with 12 points, and there are hopes the arrival of Sancho and Varane will enable them to win the title fight alongside Pep Guardiola next season.

And Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has praised ‘proven winner’ Varane ahead of the transfer after agreeing personal terms on a four-year contract.

“Of course very happy that we were able to make a deal with Real Madrid,” said Solskjaer.

“Hopefully the medical should be OK and he is a proven winner. He’s a player we’ve been following for many, many years.

“I know Sir Alex (Ferguson) was very, very close to him, so this time we have him at the other end of his career.

“He has proved throughout his career what a good person he is, first and foremost professionally and he has won what there is to win. I am very happy that we have both our players in.’
