Sergio Perez’s father is in a ‘stable’ condition after suffering a pre-heart attack immediately after the Mexican driver crashed at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix.

Perez and Carlos Sainz were involved in a high-speed crash during the final laps of the race as they battled to secure third place in Baku.

Fortunately, both drivers were able to escape the incident unharmed.

However, the accident caused Antonio Pérez Garibay to suffer a pre-infraction, a condition associated with chest pain that can occur before a heart attack.

According to Mexican publication Half-timePérez Garibay said: “Everything happened after the accident. The shock of the accident could have caused it. They are already checking my heart to see why I fainted.”

Pérez Garibay’s press office confirmed through an official statement that the medical scare occurred.

‘Perez Garibay was found unconscious in the bathroom of his home in Mexico City, where paramedics arrived to provide him with immediate medical attention,’ the statement said.

‘He was rushed to a hospital in the capital, where he is currently under medical observation and in stable condition.

“We thank you for your support and affection.”

Perez Garibay’s racing organisation, Scuderia Perez, also confirmed that the 65-year-old driver will remain under observation in hospital.

“Mr. Pérez Garibay is stable but remains in intensive care under constant medical supervision, focusing mainly on his heart and other vital organs,” the statement said.

‘The specialists in charge have indicated that his condition continues to be closely monitored.’

With his father hospitalised, Perez must now turn his attention to Sunday’s Singapore GP.

It’s a vital race for Perez, who will be trying to return to the podium for the first time since the Chinese GP in April.

He has also dropped to eighth place in the drivers’ standings with 143 points.

Red Bull will also need Perez to recover after falling behind McLaren in the constructors’ standings.

Oscar Piastri’s win and Lando Norris’ fourth place in Baku helped McLaren overtake Red Bull and consolidate a 20-point gap with seven races remaining.
