Sega intends to make an offer to acquire the company that designed the game “Angry Birds”

Date:

Sega and Rovio indicated, in a joint statement, that the offer whose value exceeds the closing price of Rovio stock by 19% on Friday.

The Japanese company “Sega” intends to make a friendly offer to acquire “Rovio”, whose game “Angry Birds” is very popular, for approximately $ 768 million, according to the two video game developers.

Sega and Rovio indicated, in a joint statement, that the offer, whose value exceeds the price at which Rovio shares closed on Friday by 19%, is part of the “long-term goal” of launching the “Sonic Hedgehog” game on mobile phones.

After the global success of Angry Birds in 2010, Rovio continued to rely heavily on its game due to its inability to create another game, which led to a stagnation in its growth.

The group specialized in mobile games, which was launched on the stock exchange in 2017, achieved revenues of $ 3486.76 million last year, with a net profit of about $ 34 million.

Rovio’s board of directors, which has about 500 employees, recommended shareholders accept the offer at $10.15 per share.

“The combination of the strengths of Rovio and Sega will lead to an amazing future,” said Alexander Pilottier-Normann, head of the Finnish group, in a statement.

At around 7:45 GMT, Rovio’s stock jumped on the Helsinki Stock Exchange by 18% to $10.06.

Sega plans to launch the acquisition offer in early May and into July, while the purchase will take place during the third quarter of the year, according to the group.

With its acquisition of Rovio, Sega will also take control of the mobile gaming platform Peiken, according to the group.
