Scientists have captured incredible ultrasound images of an unborn tiger shark that was writhing inside its mother’s womb during a conservation project.

Experts had set out to discover why so many Tiger Sharks swarm in the waters of the so-called Tiger Beach in the Bahamas, a popular place for diving tourists.

Using state-of-the-art technology, the eight-person team managed to carefully capture and scan five of the huge tiger sharks in the wild in December 2019.

Holding the shark near its boat using straps, the researchers used a portable ultrasound to scan each animal, observing the results in real time with a headset.

The expedition will provide experts with valuable information on the movements of tiger sharks in the region and will help in their future conservation.

“Performing the scans was absolutely incredible,” said marine biologist at Arizona State University James Sulikowski.

“It is amazing to know that I am using technology that was once confined in a laboratory to see if a shark is pregnant in the field.”

The team wondered if the weather, the large amount of tiger sharks seen around Tiger Beach at certain times of the year was a human-influenced behavior.

“Tiger sharks in Tiger Beach are fed by divers throughout the year to attract tiger sharks near diving tourists,” said marine biologist Neil Hammerschlag of the University of Miami.

“I wanted to know if the movements of tiger sharks were affected by diving tourism,” he added.

“This led me to wonder what are the other possible reasons why tiger sharks were so abundant in Tiger Beach and why they exhibited high residence there during the cold months of the year.”

“ Since most of the sharks were female, with a female-male ratio of 9: 1, and large, I suspected it could be related to reproduction. ”

“However, in this study, we have been performing ultrasound on tiger sharks, as well as taking blood samples for hormonal analysis to determine the reproductive status of these large predators.”

“The combination of these techniques has allowed us to examine the reproductive status, cycle and duration of shark gestation during our ongoing investigation without having to kill them.”
