Knoxville police officer Adam Willson is recovering in hospital after being shot in the leg Monday afternoon during the Austin-East Magnet High School incident in Knoxville.

Willson, who is a 20-year-old police veteran who currently works as the school’s resource officer, underwent surgery on his gunshot wounds at the University of Tennessee Medical Center, but is expected to survive.

The gunman student, who has not been identified, was pronounced dead on the spot.

No one else was injured in the shooting.

It is not yet clear why the student brought a gun to the school.

Police have not disclosed whether they think the student intended to injure himself or open fire on others.

The deadly incident broke out at about 3:15 p.m. on Monday when police first received reports of a student with a gun.

It sparked a massive backlash from multiple law enforcement agencies, including the Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, over fears it could be a mass shooting.

The agents who responded found the student in one of the school’s restrooms.

David B. Rausch, director of the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation, said officers ordered the student to come out, but he declined to do so.

The student opened fire on the officers as they entered the bathroom and hit Willson in the thigh once.

An officer fired back and fatally struck the student.

When officers entered the room, the suspect allegedly fired shots, hitting an officer. The suspect was pronounced dead on the spot and has since been identified as a student at Austin-East, ”Rausch said.

“It’s a sad day for Knoxville and it’s tough for Austin East.”

Police arrested another person immediately after the shooting, but this person is considered a witness and not a suspect.

Willson was rushed to hospital for surgery immediately after the shooting.

“He’s conscious and cheerful … It’s going to be fine,” Mayor Indya Kincannon told CBS News of the injured officer.

“I thanked him for risking his life to protect students and staff at the school. He said he would rather be hurt than anyone else. ‘

The shooting sparked a huge backlash from multiple law enforcement agencies, including the Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, over fears it could be a mass shooting.

Police initially reported multiple gunshot victims.

When asked about the overwhelming police response to a phone call that came in just before the discharge in the afternoon, Knoxville Police Chief Eve Thomas said, “We have a student, a school incident. It is our greatest fear, being an active shooter at a school. ‘

Rausch declined to call the incident a school shooting, instead calling it a “ shooting involving an officer. ”

Austin-East High School was locked up after the gunfire, and parents rushing to the scene were ordered to pick up their children from a back entrance.

Police later set up a reunification site for students and their parents on a baseball field.

The school remains closed on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.

A mother who had been divorced from her daughter waited near the school and told reporters that she was greatly relieved to receive a text message from the girl that she was safe.

The Austin-East community has been rocked by gun violence this year.

Four other students at the school have been killed in off-campus shootings in the city in recent months.

The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation is leading the investigation into the shooting.

U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives agents assist.
