That part went to Sandra Bullock, 58, who starred in the 2013 sci-fi film alongside 62-year-old George Clooney and saw her be nominated for Best Actress at the Oscars, Golden Globes and at the BAFTAs.
Scarlett said this particular rejection “was kind of the straw that broke the camel’s back,” as it made her reconsider her future in the film industry.
She said Variety: ‘I was refused for two roles – the first was Iron Man 2 and the other was Gravity by Alfonso Cuarón, I had wanted this role so badly. It was sort of the straw that broke the camel’s back. I felt really frustrated and hopeless. Like, ‘Am I doing the right job?’
Meanwhile, the actress continued to wonder if the roles she was offered were actually “filling” after her success in the hit film Lost In Translation set her up to be a bombshell, with Scarlett saying that It was “difficult” to get out of this “dovecote”. ‘ and change the narrative.
Wondering if she would make any progress in her career, she added: ‘The job I was offered was deeply unsatisfying. I think I was offered all the Marilyn Monroe scripts. I was like, ‘Is this the end of the creative road?’
However, Scarlett’s fortunes quickly turned when Emily Blunt was forced out of Iron Man 2 due to contractual obligations with Fox and she was offered the role in the Marvel movie again.
Although her role in the film wasn’t huge, it paved the way for other opportunities for the star.
She said, “This movie wasn’t going to move the needle in terms of writing my character, but there was potential for what it could be – potential for growth in subsequent films”.
