A fraudster tricked a French woman into paying hundreds of thousands of pounds after convincing her they were Brad Pitt with reels of AI-generated images.

The 53-year-old victim, who identified herself as Anne, shelled out €830,000 (£697,000) to help with what she believed was the film star’s cancer treatment.

The interior designer told the French channel TF1 that the ordeal began when he received a message on social media from someone claiming to be the actor’s mother after sharing photos of his luxurious ski trip to Tignes on Instagram.

A day later, she received a second message from an account posing as Brad Pitt, saying that her mother had already talked about her a lot.

The victim, who said she was going through a difficult time with her millionaire husband, said she struck up an unlikely friendship with the account since February 2023, receiving poems and kind affirmations.

There are very few men who write this kind of things to you. I liked the man I was talking to. He knew how to talk to women, he always did it very well,’ he stated, as reported. BFMTV.

Anne revealed that she had her suspicions and thought the account was fake at first, but after messaging every day and receiving AI-generated photos and videos of the star, she felt calmer.

Soon the blossoming relationship took a turn when fake Brad Pitt proposed to Anne and overwhelmed her with the promise of fancy gifts.

The only drawback was that you would have to pay customs duties to receive them.

This soon added up to €9,000 (£7,566).

Since Anne had already shown her willingness to part with the money, the scammer began making increasingly absurd requests.

When the victim told her “friend” that she was expecting a hefty divorce settlement from her husband, the scammer upped the ante.

Brad Pitt’s account asked for help to fund urgent kidney cancer treatment, lamenting that they could not access the funds due to his ongoing divorce from Angelina Jolie.

The scammer reportedly began sending AI-generated photos of Brad Pitt seemingly from the confines of a hospital bed.

The two communicated via text and photo messages, but Anne said he was never free to make a call, a trope of online scammers.

Anne went to the authorities with the story, who began an investigation.

It was unclear whether he had been able to recover any of his money nearly two years since the relationship began.

BFMTV reports that Anne is currently hospitalized in a clinic with severe depression.

Followers of the story shared some sympathy for the victim.

Another user questioned whether the victim could have Googled whether the Fight Club star was in the hospital to verify the claims.
