Cecily Strong has revealed that she got engaged at the end of last year.

During an appearance on Late Night With Seth Meyers on Wednesday, the former Saturday Night Live star, 40, shared her happy news and detailed the hilarious way her fiance almost ruined the proposal.

Although the Schmigadoon actress seemed excited to share her engagement story, she has kept her fiancé’s identity a secret and has only referred to him as ‘Jack’ in the past.

“I got engaged,” she shared with her former colleague Seth, though she made sure to poke fun at him in the process.

‘I know, you always said, “No one will ever love you and you will never marry.” You were wrong!’ she joked.

“I’m eating my words,” Seth said as he played along. ‘Did he do it well? It was a surprise?

Unfortunately, her fiancé Jack’s plans didn’t go as he intended, in part because Cecily was too much of a “detective.”

She admitted that the two had had conversations about getting engaged in the past, so she was already on the lookout for any hint of a proposal.

“One day he said, ‘I’m so inundated with emails and texts, look at this,'” she explained. “And he showed me his phone, and the first text was from a friend saying, ‘How did it go? ?! Ring emoji.” And then I thought. “Oh no, should I?”

And he said, “Did you see that?” And I said, ‘I could try really hard to lie, but…’ he added.

But Cecily still wanted to leave Jack the option of surprising her.

“I thought, ‘Whenever you want to do it, that’ll be the surprise,'” he remembers saying.

But Cecily admitted she “still took that away” when she wasn’t willing to wait any longer.

Although she said he could wait and surprise her later, he ultimately couldn’t wait any longer. “I had a pretty rough night in December and I was like, ‘Can I wear the damn ring now?'” she said. “This is how we got engaged.”

“I had a pretty rough night in December and I was like, ‘Can I wear the damn ring now?'” she said. “So, that’s how we got engaged.”

But even after eliminating the proposal, the comic star had other problems with her engagement ring.

“I don’t know my ring size; I wear all sizes of rings,” she admitted.

So he picked up one of those and it was five sizes too big. I wore it on my index finger for a long time, not as a statement; it would have just fallen off,’ she explained.

Cecily previously wrote about how she and Jack met in her 2020 memoir, This Will All Be Over Soon.

She shared that she met Jack at a Christmas party in 2019, but it came at an inopportune time as she was still mourning the recent death of her cousin Owen.

‘At first I thought it was very difficult to meet someone because I was losing someone I loved so much. “I knew I would have to be patient with me,” she wrote in an excerpt posted by Vulturethrough Entertainment Weekly.

But Jack ended up being exactly the support Cecily needed in that difficult time.

‘I would have to let myself cry. It would be easier to not even try during that process,” she continued. “But crying for Owen was like nothing he had ever experienced, and I promised Owen and I to continue to let all that love be there along with the sadness.
