Sarah Jessica Parker’s husband Matthew Broderick has opened up about the “embarrassing” Sex And The City role he turned down.
The longtime showbiz couple married in 1997, a year before Sarah, 59, landed her lead role as Carrie Bradshaw on the beloved HBO comedy.
Over six seasons, Sex And The City welcomed a wide variety of guest stars, from screen heartthrobs Matthew McConaughey and Vince Vaughn to singers Jon Bon Jovi and Alanis Morissette and ballet legend Mikhail Baryshnikov.
However, Matthew, who led the cast of films such as Ferris Bueller’s Day Off and The Lion King, never ended up joining their ranks.
Now she has candidly discussed the reasons why she never guest-starred on the show, in an interview on James Corden’s Sirius XM show. This life of mine….

Matthew revealed that he was offered the “embarrassing” job of playing a “premature ejaculator” in the series and decided not to accept the role.
“Whenever there was a part I could do, I couldn’t do it, that’s really all that happened,” he said, possibly referring to scheduling conflicts.
‘But also, sometimes I would say: “Do you want to spend two days as a premature ejaculator?” And I would say, you know, “Well, I don’t know if I…”, you know? “It’s a little embarrassing,” he said, as his interviewer burst out laughing.
The ‘premature ejaculator’ was short story writer Vaughn Wysel, who was eventually played by Justin Theroux in the 1999 episode Shortcomings.
Vaughn briefly dates Carrie, who has doubts about the relationship due to his sexual problem, but finds it difficult to break up with him because of how much he adores his family, particularly his lovely mother played by Valerie Harper.
Matthew expressed his fondness for Sex And The City but also hinted that he preferred not to get involved in what had become his wife’s domain.
‘I wish I had done it or been in it. You know, that was his thing, and that would stunt me or something. I don’t know,’ he said.
“It just never worked. “I loved that show and would have loved to be on it, but it never worked out,” Matthew continued.

Although he never guest starred on Sex And The City, Matthew and Sarah have performed together more than once on stage since their romance began in 1992.
In 1996, they co-starred in a revival of Frank Loesser and Abe Burrows’ Pulitzer Prize-winning musical How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying.
She originally led the cast alongside Megan Mullally before her Will & Grace fame, and when Megan left the production, Sarah was brought in as her replacement.
In 2022, Matthew and Sarah headline a Broadway revival of Neil Simon’s comedy Plaza Suite, which they then brought to London’s West End earlier this year.

Reflecting on her long-standing relationship with Matthew, Sarah once confessed that they had experienced ups and downs as a couple.
“We’ve been together for 20 years and you have good days, decent days and bad days. That’s what a marriage is,” he told the newspaper. Telegraph in 2011.
‘That’s a relationship. That’s even a friendship: relationships outside of marriage follow the same course. If you’re in it for the long haul and want meaningful relationships, you’ll go through a lot of different periods.’
