Princess Aiko of Japan will begin working at the Red Cross after finishing university, where she studies Japanese Language and Literature.

Aiko, 22, the only daughter of Emperor Naruhito, 63, and Empress Masako, 60, has shown her commitment to charitable activities with her latest move.

The 22-year-old’s contracted role with the Red Cross will not affect her official duties and she intends to perform both simultaneously, according to Kyodo News.

It is believed that the princess will travel to work at the company’s headquarters in Tokyo’s Minato district, although her exact role has not been revealed.

“I am happy to participate in the works of the Japanese Red Cross,” Princess Aiko said in a statement released by the agency. She added: “At the same time, I feel determined.”

The Japanese imperial family enjoys a long-standing connection with the charity, and Empress Masako is currently honorary president of the organization.

Aiko said: “I feel happy and honored to be able to work for the Japanese Red Cross, which has always interested me.”

“I will continue to learn various things and work hard with the awareness that I am a member of society, so I hope I can help people and society, even if only in a small way.”

The exact nature of Aiko’s role in the Red Cross is unknown.

Aiko is currently concluding her fourth year at Gakushuin University, where she studies in the Department of Japanese Language and Literature.

The princess maintains a private life, and previously suffered a period of bullying and anxiety during her childhood, which led her to drop out of school.

It comes after Princess Aiko’s aunt, Princess Kiko, reportedly underwent a medical examination to determine the cause of her mysterious illness, which was in vain.

Crown Prince Akishino’s wife, 57, underwent an endoscopy at a Tokyo hospital earlier this month, but no abnormalities were discovered.

Kiko has been suffering from an unknown illness since last year, according to reports The Mainichi.

The princess, 22, will reportedly commute to the company's headquarters in Tokyo's Minato district.

According to the Japanese newspaper, the mother of two has been advised to “rest and focus on recovering.”

While doctors have advised Kiko to rest, they have suggested that he could be dealing with painful symptoms for the next few months.

It comes after claims that Japan’s Crown Princess Kiko is unable to eat “normal foods” after contracting a mystery illness.

The Imperial Household Agency claimed that the royal mother of two has been unwell since last year, according to a national newspaper. The Mainichi.

Doctors have ruled out Covid-19 as the cause of Kiko’s poor health after the Princess tested negative for the virus and flu.

Since the cause of Kiko’s illness is still unknown, medical professionals are conducting tests to find a solution.

The princess recently attended New Year’s celebrations and appeared to be in good spirits as she shined in family portraits released to mark the New Year.
