Saquon Barkley has opened up about the worst pranks he experienced as a rookie with the New York Giants, with Eli Manning being responsible for the strangest ones.
Barkley, who signed a three-year, $37.75 million contract with the Philadelphia Eagles earlier this month, spent six seasons with the Giants after they selected him with the second overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft.
The running back earned two Pro-Bowl selections during his time in New York, where he went from a young prospect at 22 to one of the league’s top players at 27.
During an appearance on Travis and Jason Kelce New Heights PodcastBarkley recalled his days as a rookie for the Giants, where Manning, the two-time Super Bowl-winning quarterback, took on the role of chief prankster.
Saquon Barkley remembers Eli Manning pranking him back in his days as a Giants rookie.
Barkley appeared on Jason and Travis Kelce’s latest New Heights podcast
The racer shed light on some of the funniest tricks that were pulled on him when he was a rookie.
After being asked about the best stunts he did as a rookie, he told the Kelce brothers: ‘Eli was a bit of a joker. He caught me once. He did this thing where he threw grass in my mouth.
“He’s sitting there and he’s like, ‘My tooth hurts a little bit.’ Also out of nowhere. We’re practicing and I’m like, ‘Bro, you’ve got a lot of money, you should probably go get it checked out.'”
‘He said, “No, I’ll show you where it is” and then he just threw grass in my mouth. At that moment he started laughing and stuff. That’s probably my only joke.
Travis and Jason were taken aback by Manning’s unusual prank, but Barkley has since taken a leaf from his book when sharing a locker room with rookies.
“I stole this from him and I’m going to do it to the newbies,” he continued. ‘I’ll take the newbies where they’ll put the water bottle (below) and then turn it so it’s not really on when they think it’s on, and then the newbies drink it. He never really understood me, but I saw him do it.
Barkley is preparing for a new chapter in Philadelphia, where Kelce’s older brother recently ended his NFL career after 13 seasons with the Eagles.
Jason joked about his frustration with the former Giants man heading to Philadelphia as soon as he retired from the sport in a previous edition of New Heights, claiming he could miss out on a “breakout season” at Lincoln Financial Field.
He recalled that former quarterback Manning threw grass in his mouth as part of a bizarre prank.
Barkley is preparing for his first season with the Eagles after signing a three-year contract.
And after saying goodbye to New York, Barkley shared a wild reaction from his daughter, Jada, who criticized his former team after he signed with the Eagles.
Barkley revealed in an interview with his new team: “When I told her we were going to Philadelphia, she said, ‘Does that mean we’re going to win now?'”
He only had one winning season with the Giants, when they went 9-7-1 in 2022.
That was the only season Barkley made the playoffs with New York as they beat the Minnesota Vikings before falling to the Eagles in the divisional round.
Philadelphia has been much better than its division rivals lately, reaching the Super Bowl twice in the last six seasons.
