A subject close to her heart, the actress, who admits to seeing the impact of addiction on some of her closest friends, also co-produced the film with her husband Lowden, whom she married in July.

‘We have very high expectations for each other. When I tried Rona’s Orcadian accent on him for The Outrun, he said, ‘You’re not going to do that, are you?’
The actress admits that she was able to draw on a profound experience while preparing for the role, as she “was on the receiving end” of the pain and damage caused by addiction.
She said: ‘I’ve seen people I love change because of addiction. There’s a helplessness you feel when you see someone you love (friends my age and someone close to me in particular) go through that.
‘What will be etched in my brain forever is that change, when the glow covers someone’s eyes and disappears.
“If you become second best to alcohol, you become resentful, so for this role I needed to let go of my own feelings about it. And I didn’t need to be angry about it anymore.
