Fit for a princess!
The house that served as the exterior shot of the school Mia Thermopolis (Anne Hathaway) attended in the beloved The Princess Diaries film series has hit the market for $8.9 million in San Francisco’s Marina District.
The 100-year-old Lyon Street house served as the fictional Anthony R. Grove High School in the 2001 Disney film, but let’s just say the popular tourist attraction looks nothing like a classroom on the inside.
The private home was built in 1923 at the eastern end of the Presidio Wall and was designed by famed architect August Headman.
The neoclassical Mediterranean home is just over 4,500 square feet with four bedrooms and three and a half bathrooms.
Headman designed the house for Carlo Matraia, who lived there until 1940, but the house has since been updated with modern additions. It is currently owned by Michael Mendes, former CEO of Just Desserts. He and his wife bought the Lyon Street property in 2009 for $5.7 million and are moving to the East Coast, according to the Saint Francis Gate.

“It has been lovingly maintained and enhanced by its current owners, who have strived to strike a harmonious balance between the home’s original architectural details and the comfort and convenience of modern conveniences,” said the list saying.
However, the property’s debut in The Princess Diaries, which grossed $165 million at the box office, was a fluke.
At the time of the shooting, former San Francisco Giants owner Bob Lurie owned the home. Location manager Laurie Noll told the San Francisco Gate in 2021 that it was “dumb luck and perfect timing” that they purchased the property for filming. Lurie planned to sell the house after buying a house in nearby Atherton.
“I couldn’t believe it,” he told the outlet.
The former Giants owner lived in the house from 1980 to 1994.
The rooftop scene where Mia and her best friend Lily play in the stands, however, was not filmed at the Lyon Street location, but at the Hamlin School in the Excelsior District.

All four bedrooms have plenty of living space and immaculate views.

The interior of the house is a mixture of white and wood with high ceilings and a tiled floor. It also has a mix of arched and corner doorways and windows and many chandeliers.
The Lyon Street house has many special features, including a panoramic balcony view, a rooftop garden, an office and media room, and an elevator. It also has a one car garage, as opposed to street parking.
The beautiful house has a unique wraparound staircase that encloses a small garden, which is lined with red brick and detailed with golden lions.
It also has a single entrance, with a small personal balcony just above it and another larger covered balcony above it.
The house is surrounded by a lot of greenery, which gives the house a more private atmosphere.
Owners can also enjoy a luxurious rooftop patio, which has a tabletop fireplace, plenty of seating, and panoramic views of the bay. It also has tall lamps and decorative shrubs.

The dining room is off the kitchen and has enough space to seat 10 people.

The kitchen has ample counter space and a large window near the sink to look out at the hills.
Additionally, homeowners can enjoy stunning views of the hillside, along with the bay. The backyard is a perfect place to escape the city atmosphere and enjoy a sense of serenity.
