San Francisco 49ers star running back Christian McCaffrey is officially inactive tonight for the team’s season opener against the New York Jets due to a calf injury.
McCaffrey is considered one of the best running backs in the NFL, if not the best, and his absence will change the game plan for both teams.
McCaffrey’s absence will give Jordan Mason a heavy workload in the 49ers’ backfield.
Mason has been the backup running back in San Francisco for the past two seasons after the team signed him as an undrafted free agent in 2022.
The 49ers had listed McCaffrey as questionable heading into the matchup and there were indications he would play, albeit on a limited basis.
